Controlling Your Spending: How to Make Your Money Last

There are two major components involved in creating a budget: income and spending. Your income may or may not be adjustable. Of course you should always do your best at your job and seek raises or promotions. But many Americans are stuck with an hourly salary that will rise slowly if at all. The best way that you can adjust your budget is by adjusting your spending. This may not always be a fun process, but there are frugal ways to make your budget better fit your lifestyle.

Monitor, Monitor, Monitor

Take an entire month, 30 or 31 days worth of monitoring all of your spending. And all of your spending means all of your spending. This includes all of your expenses such as utilities, cable bills, phone bills, groceries, car payments, house payments, and so forth. But this also includes frivolous spending that occurs from day to day, from a cup of Starbucks Coffee to a pack of gum from a convenience store. Every cent that you spend needs to be accounted for during this month. It may not sound like fun, but evaluating where your money is being spent will help you when you go to controlling your spending.

Determine Your Needs Versus Your Wants

Americans have surrounded themselves with luxuries that they probably don’t realize are even luxuries. Cable television, high speed internet, and satellite radio are three examples. While these options are convenient and provide a great source of entertainment, they can also be wants as opposed to needs. Cheaper options such as basic cable, dial-up and your basic radio will cut out some of your spending.

The next place where you will want to analyze your needs and wants is the grocery and drug store isles. The difference lies in the prices of the items that you are buying. People are often fearful of generic or store brand products, and sometimes, this is for good reason. But, do you really need the name brand over-the-counter pain reliever, or will store brand ibuprofen do just as well? Does more advertisement automatically mean that the product is innately better than a store brand product? You must realize that when you are buying brand name much of what you are paying for is the advertising.

Conclusion

In the end, there are several ways to pinch pennies and control your spending. One of the biggest ways is to sit back and really look at what you are spending money on. Five dollars here and three dollars there do add up, and if you are not careful will create a leak in your budget. Also, separate what you need versus what you want. You will find that you may be able to live without much of what you consider necessities.
